Groundworks Eastleigh

Heavy London Clay dominates the geology across most of Eastleigh borough. This clay is highly plastic, prone to seasonal volume change, and requires careful foundation design — particularly where trees are present or where extensions are being added to existing structures. Understanding clay heave and shrinkage is essential for long-term structural stability.

Clay excavation challenges are routine. Eastleigh’s clay can be sticky and difficult to work in wet weather, or hard and requiring heavy plant during dry periods. Trench stability, suitable backfill materials, and proper compaction are all critical considerations for drainage and foundation works.

M3 and M27 corridor provides excellent transport access. Eastleigh’s position at the junction of two major motorways makes it straightforward for materials delivery and plant mobilisation — but also means that sites near the motorways may have access constraints, noise considerations, or highway authority requirements for construction traffic management.

Suburban character with significant infill development. Much of Eastleigh borough consists of established residential suburbs, and a large proportion of groundworks projects involve extensions, replacements, or infill plots. This means working on constrained sites with limited access, managing relationships with neighbours, and careful planning of deliveries and excavations.
