Professional Groundworks in Portsmouth
Foundations, drainage, site clearance and civil engineering across Portsmouth, Southsea, Cosham, Portchester, Hilsea, Fratton and Drayton.
Portsmouth is one of the most densely populated cities in the United Kingdom, with a constant programme of residential development, commercial regeneration, and infrastructure improvement. Whether you are building a new-build housing development in Cosham, extending a Victorian terrace in Southsea, or working on a commercial scheme near Gunwharf Quays, professional groundworks are the essential first stage of any successful construction project.
Dorrington Groundworks operates from Curdridge in South Hampshire, around 25 minutes from central Portsmouth via the M27. We have been delivering groundworks, drainage, and civil engineering services across Portsmouth and the surrounding area for nearly two decades. We understand the unique challenges of building on Portsea Island — from high water tables and coastal ground conditions to tight urban access — and we have the experience and equipment to handle projects of all scales.

Understanding Portsmouth’s Ground Conditions
Portsea Island geography defines the groundworks challenges in Portsmouth. Much of the city sits on Portsea Island, a low-lying area surrounded by Portsmouth Harbour, Langstone Harbour, and the Solent. The underlying geology is predominantly London Clay overlain by raised beach deposits and alluvial silts, which can vary significantly over short distances — particularly near the harbour edges and reclaimed land around the dockyard.
High water tables and coastal influence are the most significant challenge for groundworks in Portsmouth. With much of the city at or near sea level, groundwater levels are frequently high, and tidal influence extends well inland. Dewatering, sump pumping, and careful drainage design are often essential. Foundation depths may need to be adjusted, and waterproofing of below-ground structures is critical.
Dense urban environment presents access challenges throughout Portsmouth. The city has some of the tightest residential streets in the south of England, particularly in Southsea, Old Portsmouth, and Fratton. Delivering ready-mix concrete, manoeuvring excavators, and managing skip lorries all require meticulous planning, traffic management, and close liaison with neighbours and the local authority.
Historic and brownfield sites are common across Portsmouth due to its long naval and industrial heritage. Sites around the Historic Dockyard, Flathouse area, and former MOD land may contain contaminated soils, unexploded ordnance risks, or archaeological remains. Thorough site investigation is essential before groundworks can commence on these sites.
